AIT’s intelligent vehicle team, Kuen-Chai, won all the races and has
become the champion of Thailand Intelligent Vehicle Challenge 2009.
Kuen-Chai received Baht 300,000 cash prize and championship trophy.
At the same competition, the other AIT’s intelligent vehicle team,
Pak-Shee received the excellent creativity award with Baht 50,000 cash
prize. On July 29 2009, the final round of Thailand Intelligent Vehicle
Challenge 2009 (TIVC2009) was organized at Bangkok Racing Circuit.
Out of 21 teams from 19 universities, only 8 teams, which performed
the best in the first round competition organized earlier, raced in the
final round. Out of these teams, two of them were from AIT. The
finalists are Kuen-Chai from AIT, Pak- Shee from AIT, Air Force-II from
Royal Thai Airforce Academy, Duck Riders from King Mongkut’s University
of Technology North Bangkok, Dark Horse from King Mongkut’s University
of Technology Thonburi, Zigzag from Khonkaen University, Black List
from Naresuan University and Arrive-II from Mae Fah Luang
University.
The opening ceremony of TIVC2009 was presided over by the Minister of
Science and Technology of Thailand, Dr. Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich,
along with Prof. Worsak Kanoknukulchai, Vice President, Dr. Jackrit
Suthakorn, Thai Robotics Society president, Mr. Jefferey D. Nygaard,
Vice President, Seagate Technology (Thailand), and Dr. Manukid
Parnichkun, Chairman of the organizing committee.
This is the first time at TIVC that two intelligent vehicles had to
race in the same track and the same time. The starting points of the 2
vehicles are 935 meter apart. The team running faster and able to catch
the other team within 20 minutes wins the race called the “knock out”.
Otherwise, the winner is determined based on longer running distance.
The final race was between Kuen- Chai from AIT and Air Force-II which
was supervised by Dr. Sukon Puntunan, an alumni of Mechatronics from
AIT. Kuen-Chai ran faster than Air Force-II but could not knock Air
Force-II out because of the limitation of time. Kuen-Chai ran 7901.2
meters and avoided 18 obstacles while Air Force-II ran 7161.4 meters
and avoided 14 obstacles.
Kuen-Chai’s members comprise of Methee Srisupundit (M.Eng
Mechatronics), Nassaree Benalie (M.Eng Mechatronics), and Somphong
Thanok (D.Eng Mechatronics). The team is under supervision of Dr.
Manukid Parnichkun and Dr. Matthew Dailey.
Kuen-Chai uses the intelligent vehicle which was developed at
Mechatronics of AIT. The car is 2.0 Litre Mitsubishi Galant and
equipped with AIT made Adaptive Cruise Control System. Various sensors
such as GPS, electronic compass and Laser Scanner are equipped in the
car. The high-level system communicates through the serial port to
other microcontrollers to drive motors which control steering angle and
speed according to high-level system command.
Pak-Shee received the excellent creativity award. It knocked Black
List out in the quarter-final race before being knocked out by Air
Force-II. The team comprises of Suradech Duongpummet (M.Eng
Mechatronics), Wongsakorn Pornnutvuttikul (M.Eng Mechatronics), Alisa
Kunapinun (M.Eng Mechatronics). The team is also supervised by Dr.
Manukid Parnichkun and Dr. Matthew Dailey and assisted by Mr. Somphop
Limsoonthrakul (RA Mechatronics).
Pak-Shee also uses the intelligent vehicle which was developed at
Mechatronics (School of Engineering and Technology) of AIT. It is an
electrical golf cart with 2 kW power.
The event has been extensively covered in the media.
