New century is the century of oceans : expert

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Said Irandoust, President AIT remarked
that he was looking forward towards the recommendations from the
symposium which will help in providing graduates with better knowledge
and skills.

The AIT President paid tribute to Dr. Yang Yi, who was the moving
spirit behind the symposium. Dr. Yi’s association with AIT spanned more
than 15 years and he was working as an adjunct faculty at AIT. At the
time of his untimely death in July this year, he was the President of
the Asian Fisheries Society, Shanghai.

Prof. Pan Yingjie, President, Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), China,
who is a co-chair at the symposium, stated that
the new century is the century of the oceans. He added that Asia is a
very important production base in the field of aquaculture. Marine
resources can help tide over the issue of world food security, he said.
Prof. Yingjie called for a rational and sustainable use of marine life
and resources.

Prof. Ida Siason, President, Asian Fisheries Society (AFS) said the
symposium would enable sharing information, experiences and emerging
concepts. It would focus on contents of curriculum, while stressing on
issues of governance, conflict resolution, coastal management,
livelihood, sustainable development apart from gender and
fisheries.

Prof. Irandoust, Prof. Yingjie and Prof Siason are the International
chairs of the symposium. The Symposium is focusing on the theme “The
future of aquaculture and fisheries education”.

The symposium seeks to be a forum for exchange of information on the
status and recent advances of aquaculture and fisheries education in
Asia and other parts of the world. Another objective of the symposium
is to share experiences among educators, policy makers and industry on
emerging needs for aquaculture and fisheries education. The third
objective of the symposium is to promote collaboration among educators,
scientists and institutions involved in aquaculture and fisheries
education, research and development.
