By 2020, half of ADB’s work will be in PPP mode : Dr Lohani

Dr. Lohani added that this changed profile and shift to private sector
implies that new jobs and skills like Public Private Partnership (PPP)
specialists and private sector development specialists will be in
demand replacing earlier jobs like agricultural credit specialists and
agronomists. He identified risk management specialists, climate change
specialists, regional cooperation specialists, resettlement
specialists, environmental safeguard specialists, results management
specialists and webmasters as emerging jobs. On the other hand,
agricultural credit specialists, agronomists, livestock specialists,
aquaculture specialists, fisheries specialists and forestry specialists
were described as fading jobs, particularly from an ADB perspective.

While deliberating on ADB’s “Strategy 2020”, Dr. Lohani stated that
anticipated job opportunities would arise in infrastructure,
environment, regional cooperation, education and financial sector
development. Within infrastructure, ttransport, energy, PPP, water, and
urban development would be core areas; while within the financial
sector capital markets, banking, finance sector development, and public
financial management would be in focus. ADB would require almost 500
more positions during 2010-2012, including 180 professional staff and
national officers each, apart from 140 administrative staff. He added
that during 2010-2012, Central and West Asia would form the major
target area for ADB’s operations.

Dr. Lohani complimented AIT for its Strategy 2013 stating that a
strategy helps in clearing what he termed as “goal congestion” within
organizations. He also appreciated AIT President Said Irandoust for the
regular interactions and exchange of ideas being organized at AIT.
Earlier the AIT President welcomed Dr. Lohani and thanked him for
agreeing to share his views on ADB’s people strategy.

Dr. Lohani is an alumnus of AIT having received his Doctoral Degree in
Environmental Engineering (Environmental Technology and Management)
from AIT in 1977. He also served as a faculty member at AITand served
as Chairman of the Environmental Engineering Division until he joined
the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 1985.
