This year, World Environment Day (WED) 2010 focuses on explicitly
articulating the linkages between biodiversity, climate change and low
carbon development. The theme of WED 2010 is “Many Species, One Planet,
One Future.”

The UN’s Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Report (2005) stressed
that although scientists have no clear idea of how many species live on
earth, an unprecedented mass extinction of life on Earth is now
occurring.

Periods of extinction in the planet's history are not uncommon,
but this episode of species extinction is greater than anything the
world has experienced for the past 65 million years, the report said.
Species extinction is significantly due to humankind’s unsustainable
methods of production and consumption, it said.

According to a landmark report in 2007 by the UN Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change, global warming is one of the biggest threats
to securing biodiversity with approximately 20-30 per cent of plant and
animal species likely to be at a greater risk of extinction if
increases in global average temperature exceed 1.5 to 2.5 degrees
Celsius, (2.7 to 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit).

Although many individuals benefit from activities that lead to
biodiversity loss and ecosystem change, such as the conversion of
natural ecosystems to agricultural land and from the exploitation of
biodiversity, the full costs borne by society often exceed the
benefits, the report said.

Such issues will be highlighted on campus on 4 June 2010 by
AIT/UNEP.RRC.AP, which has organized a series of special activities for
AIT to mark WED 2010. World Environment Day aims to be the biggest,
most widely celebrated, global day for positive, environmental
action.

The event at AIT will begin with a fish release program and the
launching of the AIT Biodiversity Map. Guest speakers include Dr. Suvit
Yodmani, Former Minister and Regional Director of the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP). A video message from the UNEP Executive
Director, Achim Steiner, will also be presented during the morning
activities. The celebration will followed by a "Green Lunch" prepared
by Sodexo Thailand and the AIT/UNEP.RRC.AP team. AIT's Centre of
Excellence in Sustainable Development in the context of Climate Change
(SDCC) and TEAM Consulting are co-sponsors of the program.

World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly
in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human
Environment. Commemorated yearly on June 5th, WED is one of the
principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates
worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention
and action.
