In an official ceremony being organized at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs on 25 August 2010, H.E. Kasit Piromya will propose the adoption
of the AIT Charter by consensus. After signing by H.E. Kasit Piromya,
the new AIT Charter will be signed by designated representatives of
merited governments in alphabetic order.
The text of the new Charter was formally endorsed by the
Intergovernmental Working Group comprising of AIT’s partners on 6
February 2009, and subsequently formally proposed by the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs of Thailand to the meeting of the Cabinet of the
Government of Thailand on 4 May 2010 in Bangkok. A Cabinet resolution
on 4 May 2010 authorized the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to execute the
legal adoption procedure for the New AIT Charter. It also decided that
the Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should sign on behalf
of the Royal Thai Government to become a founding member of the new
AIT.
In its proposal to the Thai Cabinet, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
stated that intergovernmental recognition for AIT would boost
Thailand’s claim as a hub of international organizations and center of
high learning in the region, and that AIT would also serve as a nexus
to promote joint-cooperation among other countries in higher education
and research and development in science and technology.
