WCMC Director delves on new initiatives

This was revealed by Dr. Jon Hutton, Director of the Cambridge based
UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC), while speaking at AIT-UNEP RR.CAP on 18 October
2010. Dr. Hutton was enroute to Nagoya for the tenth meeting of the
Conference of the Parties (COP 10), being held from 18 to 29 October
2010. Talking about the “Protected Plant” initiative,
Dr. Hutton revealed that even before its launch, the website is
receiving 4000 hits a day. “Once it is formally launched, we expect it
to be a very popular product,” he added.

He elaborated on the role being played by UNEP-WCMC, which is
collaboration between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
and WCMC 2000, a UK-based entity. WCMC was initiated by International
Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN),but the management of WCMC was
moved to UNEP later. Since 2003, it has a mandate from the UNEP
Governing Council to provide a range of biodiversity-related services
to UNEP, biodiversity-related conventions and their constituent
party-states, and other bodies in the non-governmental and private
sectors.

Welcomed the guest, Mr. Mahesh Pradhan, Regional Director, AIT- UNEP
RR.CAP outlined the Asia-Pacific
Climate Change Adaptation Forum
being organized at Bangkok on 21-22
October 2010. AIT - UNEP RRC.AP is a core organizer of the two day
forum.
