“Need to spend wisely while tackling climate change”

Chairman of the workshop, Dr. Mukand Singh Babel, Coordinator, Water
Engineering and Management Field of Study, School of Engineering and
Technology (SET) said that the two day workshop “will review the
project status and further strengthen our strategy to run this joint
project.” The event gathering was implemented by AIT under a joint
research project with UNESCO-IHE and Department of
Irrigation (DOI), Nepal. The project is being conducted by two doctoral
students each based at AIT and UNESCO-IHE, along with one master’s
student from AIT.

“Through this partnership project we hope to make difference by
knowing which climate change adaptation options are the best”, Prof.
Uhlenbrook mentioned during the workshop. The workshop included topics
such as integrated approach to global change adaptation in agriculture
and water management practices in the Koshi and Indrawati river basins
in Nepal, apart from the assessment of global changes at regional and
local level to analyze the impacts on hydrology and water resources in
selected river basins in Asia.

Participants from IHE included Dr. Sreedhar Maskey, Senior Lecturer,
and Mr. Dinesh Bhatt, doctoral student; while Department of Irrigation,
Nepal was represented by Mr. Uttam Raj Timilsina, Deputy Director
General, and Mr. Suman Sijapati, Senior Divisional Engineer. The
workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Sudip Kumar Rakshit, Vice President –
Research, AIT. Others who attended the workshop included Mr. Tomi
Haryadi, Project Manager, and Mr. Amandeep Singh Sangha, Center of
Excellence on Sustainable Development in the context of Climate Change
(SDCC).
