Republic of Indonesia becomes 14th signatory of the new AIT Charter

H.E. Mr. Hatta remarked that Indonesia is “very pleased and happy” to sign the AIT Charter. The ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Bob Tobing, Counsellor, Information and Cultural Affairs, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia; Mr. Krishna Djelani, Counsellor (Protocol and Counsular Affairs); Mr. Suargana Pringganu, First Secretary; and Ms. Tika from the embassy.Earlier the ambassador of Indonesia was invited to sign the Charter by Mr. Ittiporn Boonpracong, Director General, Department of Treaty and Legal Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand. Inviting the ambassador, Mr. Boonpracong stated that Indonesia would be the fourteenth signatory, and the fourth ASEAN country to sign the Charter. “The Charter will mark a new era for AIT,” he said. Four countries have already ratified the AIT Charter, he added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand was represented by Ms. Oracha Tanakorn, Director of the Treaty Division; Mr. Rangsan Maneeroj, Counsellor, Department of International Organisations; Ms. Ranoppun Kapittai, First Secretary, Department of International Organisations; Mr. Sarayut Tienkingkaew, First Secretary, Department of Treaty and Legal Affairs; and Ms. Anisong Soralump,Second Secretary, Department of
Treaty and Legal Affairs.

The new AIT Charter was signed on 25 August 2010 by the Foreign Minister of Thailand, H.E. Mr. Kasit Piromya. Twelve countries namely People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Kingdom of Cambodia, Republic of India, Japan, Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Republic of Philippines, Republic of Seychelles, Democratic
Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Kingdom of Sweden, Kingdom of Thailand, Democratic Republic of Timor Leste and one international organization, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) signed the Charter that day.
