Karnataka officials train in AIT on rural development
Rural development officials from the Indian province of Karnataka joined a customized training program on“Managing Rural Development” at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Speaking at the inaugural program, Prof. Jayant Kumar Routray, coordinator, Regional and Rural Development Planning (RRDP) and Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management (DPMM) field of study at AIT remarked that Thailand had a lot of lessons to offer in the field of rural development.
Prof. Routray stated that Thailand has performed exceedingly well in
almost all development indicators. Literacy levels are above 94 per
cent, while the percentage of children who advance to the last grade of
primary school stand at 100 per cent. Only eight per cent of the
population in Thailand is regarded as poor, while improved sanitation
facilities have covered 95 per cent of the population. Prof. Routray
emphasized that the King of Thailand, His Majesty King Bhumibol
Adulyadej, has personally led the development agenda, leading Thailand
to a path of progress.Welcoming the participants, Dr. Mokbul Morshed Ahmad Associate Dean,
School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) stated that
their School concentrates on poverty alleviation, Climate Change and
Sustainable Development.Head of the delegation Mr. K. Sundar Nayak expressed his happiness at
the program and added that the team is keen to learn about development
issues. Ms. Premakumari, Coordinator of the delegation expressed her
gratitude to AIT for organizing the program. According to Ms. Vineeta
Thapa, training coordinator, this is the second batch of officials from
Karnataka which are receiving training at AIT. The first batch was at
AIT from 5-10 September 2011, and the current batch will undergo
training from 19-24 September 2011.
