More labor arriving, army to join soon for cleaning operations

AIT President Prof. Said Irandoust held a personal meeting with the
Col. Artcha Boongrapu , Directorate of Civil Military Affairs of Royal
Thai Armed Forces on 19 January 2012, following which AIT has
despatched a letter asking for help from 100 army personnel to help
clean the AIT campus. The army has also offered to bring heavy
equipment to clear the debris. Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Chairman,
AIT Main Campus Rehabilitation Committee is coordinating this effort
with the army.

Cleaning operations have now increased pace, with the academic
buildings now ready to receive research students from 15 January 2012.
The ground floors of the main administration building and the library
building have received a major cleaning operation, and today (14
January 2012), the Language Center was been washed by professional
cleaners.

On campus, Dr. Thammarat Koottatep, Chairman of the Task Force on
Natural Environment, remarked that 200 workers from three professional
companies are engaged in the cleaning operations. “This intensive
cleaning will be followed by a specific chemical spray to remove any
fungal growth,” he said. Apart from this 150 people from Sodexo are
also engaged in cleaning operations, he added. Joining them today were
17 students from Rajabhat University, who along with 20 army personnel
were helping clear and clean the laboratories in AIT’s School of
Environment, Resources and Development (SERD).

“We have arranged for 60 more labor work force from today to engage in
heavy manual work of clearing the debris at AIT,” says Mr. Sanjeev
Jayasinghe, Director Fundraising, who received instructions from the
President to arrange for more labor to supplement the existing efforts.

The AIT President and Mr. Jayasinghe had met Mir Nusrat Ali Khan,
Regional Representative, World Trade on 10 January 2012, and requested
his help to try and secure laborers for AIT. “On 13 January courtesy
the meeting, AIT managed to get 25 laborers and on 14 January we got
another 35 laborers”, Mr. Jayasinghe says. They will be at AIT for a
period of 45 days.

The cleaning efforts have concentrated on academic and administration
buildings, and would shift to residential areas in the coming days.
From 18 January 2012, Sodexo will provide an additional 30 staff to
support AIT operations.

Already engaged in the campus are professional cleaners from three
companies, namely, Clean Plus Thailand, Pro Maid and CC Clean.
