AIT students give to Thai orphanage

The financial gift was handed over to House of Joy’s Italian founder
and director Ms. Dolci Donata at a small ceremony at the AIT Student
Union Office in Korea House, AIT, on 30 March 2012. The money was
raised by the AITSU from selling commemorative T-shirts for
International Women’s Day 2012.

SU Campus and Environment Chairperson, Afzal Jamil, 29, explained that
it was the first time such a donation had been made by the union. He
added that they planned to continue the practice of giving every
semester. “We want to diversify the activities of the SU to demonstrate
AIT students’ concern for underprivileged communities.”

Arjun Kumar, an MBA student from Indore, India, who was instrumental in
bringing House of Joy and AITSU together, agreed. “As students and as
human beings it’s important for all of us to be socially conscious of
others in need.”

Located near the border with Myanmar in Sangkhlaburi, Kanchanaburi
province, Baan Unrak is a
non-government, non-religious, and non-political development project
founded in 1991 and focused on supporting children and mothers.

A primary part of its mission is a children's home which provides food,
housing, and medical, emotional support and opportunities to over 130
children, and shelter to over 190 people in need. Baan Unrak gives
food, shelter, medical psychological and spiritual care, education and
work opportunities to those most desperate and vulnerable, mostly women
and children.
