In just two hours of open viewing, over 200 visitors reviewed the 20
research posters exhibited at the Korea House Building in the center of
the campus. The competitive event was organized in record time by the
Student Union to provide an opportunity for senior graduating students
to communicate their research on campus.
Opening and closing the event as the honored guest, Prof. IM Pandey,
Vice President for Academic Affairs, praised the student organizers and
participants for their overall creativity.
“This event is an example of our finest students seeking to
distinguish themselves, which is an important factor in success,” he
said.

The end-of-semester event was the brainchild of master’s student
Mr. Hitesh Sharma, who recently suggested staging a poster competition
to the Student Union.
“We discussed the idea with AIT President Irandoust who supported and
motivated us to organize this competition,” said the SU’s Mr. Waheed
Iqbal, a PhD candidate at the School of Engineering and
Technology.
Of the twenty posters exhibited, students at the School of Engineering
and Technology (SET) displayed 14 and students from the School of
Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) displayed 6 posters. Each
poster followed a set template created by organizers.
“We believe that this event will help other junior students to see the
research of their seniors, and the event will contribute to improve the
research culture in AIT,” Mr. Waheed Iqbal said.
Ms. Wipada Chanthaweethip, 27, a Master’s student, AIT-TSP (Telecom
Sud Paris) Dual Degree Program in Information Management, agreed,
noting that the competition was a nice way for AIT students to channel
their research results to others, especially those in different
academic fields, and to realize that their research can be applied to
real situations.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, 27, a Master’s degree student from the Natural
Resources Management field of study, was pleased to present his
research on “Evaluation and Prediction of Soil Erosion Using SWAT Model
at the Black River Basin, Northwestern Region of Vietnam: a Case Study
of Hoa Binh Province”.
“I can learn something about my friends’ research this way and in the
future I will be able to make a better poster,” he said.
Mr. Yakindra Prasad Timilsena, 35, who conducted his research in
France at Lermab, which is a partner agent with AIT through the
SDCC/AIT-France Networks, and who won the Best Poster Award for SERD,
said his work is mostly related to AIT's green technology focus,
looking at plant-based materials as sustainable sources of fuels.
He explained: “Actually my master thesis was in the biomass
pretreatment. I used three different kinds of lignocellulosic
feedstocks for assessing the pretreatment methods and their effect on
enzymatic hydrolysability of the biomass pulp. My poster was about one
of the three objectives of my thesis research. It basically benefits
human society by helping in reducing environmental pollution, if we can
produce and increase the use of biofuels instead of the petroleum-based
fuels.”
Ms. Mintra Ruensuk, 25, a Master’s student from the Computer Science
field of study drew a lot of attention from exhibit goers. Her research
on “Voice, Gesture, and Web Interfaces for Human-Robot Interaction in
Service Environments” showed how the software she created could monitor
a robot’s movements. “This event benefits first-year students to grasp
ideas for their own research. It should also help the new graduates to
improve their research work after viewing other students’ research
work.”
Faculty members Prof. Louis Hornyak, Director of the Center for
Learning Innovation and Quality (CLIQ); Prof. Gupta from SERD; and Dr.
Matthew Dailey from SET, served as expert judges. All judges interacted
with the poster-makers, scoring presentations in five equally weighted
categories covering significance of ideas, creativity, quality of
methodology, validity of conclusions drawn from the results, and
clarity of presentation.
