Workshop on Ionosphere Scintillations Monitoring using GPS

Workshop on Ionosphere Scintillations Monitoring using GPS

A workshop on Ionosphere Scintillations Monitoring using GPS was organized by the Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems (RS-GIS) field of study at AIT’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET) on 17 October 2012.

Organized in conjunction with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the workshop saw participation from three dozen delegates from several countries related Civil Aviation Organisations and Space Organisations. Inaugurating the workshop, Dr. Nitin Afzulpurkar, Dean, SET remarked that the workshop was an opportunity for everyone to
interact and learn from each other. Stating that the School of Engineering and Technology at AIT offers the entire spectrum of engineering fields, he elaborated on research being undertaken at AIT.

Dr. Sujan Saraswati from ICAO described AIT as one of the most prominent institution of engineering and technology in the region.Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Saraswati stated that the effect of ionosphere disturbances is severe in the Asia Pacific region. Low latitude regions experience the ionosphere effect more than others, he added Dr. Susumu Saito of Electronic Navigation Research Institute (ENRI), Tokyo, who is also the Chairperson of Ionosphere Studies Task Force, ICAO also spoke on the occasion.

Dr. Nitin Kumar Tripathi, Associate Dean, SET and Coordinator, RS-GIS field of study, who led the workshop on behalf of AIT, described the workshop as a learning exercise, which can be a basis for further collaboration between various centres to share data and evolve a strategy to monitor extreme climatic events. Also participating in the workshop was Dr. Durairaju Kumaran Raju of National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore.
