Prof. Khairun stated that UTP has nine research clusters, including
one on sustainable resources. UTP, which is wholly owned by Petronas,
the Mayasian national oil and gas company, also hosts three chairs from
Shell, Mitsubishi and Schlumberger. Prof. Khairun was accompanied by
Dr. Mohamed Hasnain Isa of Department of Fundamental and Applied
Science, and Dr. Nasir Shafiq of Department of Civil Engineering. The
delegation revealed that UTP has faculty from 30 countries and students
from 50 countries. UTP wishes to engage with AIT, particularly with a
focus in the ASEAN region, the delegation said.
Welcoming the visitors, Mr. Ahmed Amjad Ali, Head, External Relations
and Communications Office (ERCO) stated that AIT has become an
International Intergovernmental Organization since January 2012, and
nine countries had ratified its Charter so far. AIT has always been
international is its orientation, and this is reflected in its faculty
and staff composition. AIT also houses AIT Extension, AIT Consulting,
Yunus Center, CSR Asia Center and the ASEAN Regional Center of
Excellence on Millennium Development Goals (ARCMDG), he added.
Dr. Amararatne Yakupitiyage, Acting Dean, School of Environment,
Resources and Development (SERD) elaborated on the offerings at AIT. He
was accompanied by Dr. Mokbul Morshed Ahmed, Associate Dean, SERD. The
visitors were provided an overview of the Environmental Engineering and
Management (EEM) offering at AIT by Prof. Chettiyappan Visvanathan of
SERD. Prof. Mukand Singh Babel of Water Engineering and Management
(WEM) and Director, Asian Water Research and Education (AWARE) Center
briefed the visitors about the School of Engineering and Technology
(SET) and AIT’s programs in issues related to water management,
flooding and disaster management. Ms. Wannapa Pliansri, Coordinator,
ERCO, and Ms. Carol Cabildo Guzman, Assistant Program Officer, ERCO
also joined the meeting.
