AIT alumnus Prof. Yew-Chaye Loo made Member of the Order of Australia

Originally from Malaysia, Yew-Chaye Loo graduated from the Asian
Institute of Technology in 1968 with a Master of Engineering in
Structural Engineering and Construction from the School of Civil
Engineering. Prof. Loo was also a Seconded Associate Professor to AIT
from 1981-1984.

The Queen’s Birthday Honours is a part of the British, Canadian,
Australian, New Zealand and other Commonwealth Realms Honours Systems
announced on the celebration of reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II’s
official birthday. It is the occasion when many Commonwealth
countries highest honours awardees are named.

Australian Governor-General Quentin Bryce approved the awards that were
recently announced to the country’s public. The awards include 582
recipients in the general division of the Order of Australia, and
recognize their diverse contributions and service to fellow citizens in
Australia and internationally.

“Awards in the Australian Honours System represent the highest level of
recognition accorded by our nation for outstanding achievement and
service,” Ms. Bryce said.

A highly accomplished engineer, Prof. Loo is the author and co-author
of four books and over 260 research papers and reports in the field of
civil and structural engineering. His research interests include
Concrete Structures, Bridge Engineering, Computational Mechanics as
well as Bridge and Road Pavement Asset Management.

Since 2008, Prof. Loo has been the Director of Internationalization and
Professional Liaison of the Science, Environment, Engineering and
Technology Group, Griffith University.

Professor Debra Henly, Pro Vice Chancellor, Science, Environment,
Engineering and Technology, Griffith University, congratulated Prof.
Loo in an email to the university’s faculty, saying he was recognized
for his distinguished career in civil and structural engineering, as
Foundation Professor of Engineering, as well as Head of the School of
Engineering at Griffith University.
