Organized at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, the special charity
dinner got off to a good start when Dr. Subin
Pinkayan, Chairperson of the Friends of AIT Foundation, AIT
Hall of Fame member, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Thailand, announced the return of the fundraising drive
that was halted temporarily.
The Foundation was initiated in 2011 following a donation of one
million Baht by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
"The campaign is being recommenced from today," Dr. Subin said. All
proceeds from the event will be presented to the Foundation to support
scholarships and development of research at AIT, he
announced.
The AIT Alumni Association and AIT jointly organized the event which
attracted over four hundred guests, including members of the AIT
Hall of Fame and many notable members of AIT's alumni in Thailand. The
event also received wide sponsorship from leading Thai corporations and
businesses.
Mr. Chawalit Chantararat, President of the AIT Alumni Association
(AITAA) Mother Chapter, remarked that the dinner talk would enhance the
prestige of both the Institute and its alumni as Dr. Prasarn
is a product of AIT, having graduated with a Master’s degree in
engineering in1976.
Addressing the august gathering, Dr. Prasarn offered a master
class assessment of the global financial system and the
challenges and opportunities it presents to Thailand. He also remarked
about AIT and its impact. “The quality of the people is the main
driving force for economic development of the country,” the governor
said. "AIT has played a very important part as a engine of economic
growth by contributing to development of the region."
Prof. Worsak Kanok Nukulchai, Interim AIT President, thanked Dr.
Prasarn and the AIT Alumni Association for the event and talk. Later,
Dr. Subin and Dr. Sahas Baunditkul, former Deputy Prime Minister of
Thailand and member of AIT’s Executive Committee honored Dr. Prasarn.
AIT’s own Ms. M.L. Thanisa Choombala and Mr. Bhawat Traipattanakul were
co-emcees for the gala.
The keynote address was followed by a question and answer
session and a press conference. The BOT chief fielded questions
about the Thai economy, the impact of the turbulence in global
financial markets, and the possibility of a common ASEAN
currency.
