Students from 15 countries join AIT’s January 2014 batch

Stating that AIT is committed to the Sustainable Development of the
Asia-Pacific region, Prof. Kumar exhorted the students to avail of the
myriad range of educational, research and outreach programs at the
Institute. “The success of AIT is measured by the accomplishment of its
students,” Prof. Kumar said, as he enumerated the accomplishments of
the Institute’s illustrious alumni. He suggested that besides
academics, students should get involved in numerous activities such as
“Greening of the AIT campus.”

The Vice President for Academic Affairs also urged students to
maintain high standards of ethical conduct. He asked students to get
acquainted with the AIT faculty to make the most of the immense
opportunities offered by the Institute. Prof. Kumar remarked that
research and outreach are strengths of AIT, and hoped that students
will find the Institute “exciting, rewarding and stimulating.”

Dr. Nitin Kumar Tripathi, Acting Dean of School of Engineering and
Technology (SET); Prof. C Visvanathan, Interim Dean of School of
Environment, Resources and Development (SERD); and Mr. Salman Ali
Suhail, President, AIT Students Union (AITSU) also welcomed the
students. Mr. Tenzin Rabgyal, Interim Coordinator, Admissions and
Scholarships, was the Master of Ceremonies.

In the afternoon session of the Orientation Program, incoming students
were also informed of the “AIT Harassment Policy,” by Dr. Donyapruet
Krairit, Chair, Gender Equality Committee and Interim Dean, School of
Management. Ms. Laarni B. Roa, Head, Student Office informed the
students about the “Student Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards,” and
“Academic Requirements and Practices.” Students were also briefed about
Language Center Services and English Language Requirements by AIT’s
Language Center. Issues concerning Student Welfare, Placement,
Counseling and Medical Services, were highlighted by Ms. Joan Carla
Gonzales, Coordinator, Student Affairs Unit and Career Center.

Dr. Agus Harianto of IT Services spoke about Use of Student
Information System (SIS), while Mr. Olivier Nicole spoke about Laptop
Subsidy, computing and network facilities and Internet ethics. Ms.
Napha Pengtaengmo, Contract Manager, Sodexo informed about Student
Accommodation and Facility Management, while Ms. Suda Inta of
Government Relations Unit (GRU) informed the students about Educational
Visa and Government Relations Services. Later the incoming students
were taken for an AIT Campus Walk by the AITSU.

Of the 56 students who have joined AIT, 22 have joined SET, while 20
have joined SERD. Eleven students have joined AIT’s School of
Management (SOM), while three are enrolled in joint SET-SERD programs.
Half of the incoming student body is female.
