AIT Extension partnered with DHL, Thai grocery and merchandising
retailer ‘Big C,’ and agribusiness and food major Charoen Pokphand
Foods Distribution Center (CPFDC) to create the program for SLFI.
DHL Distribution General Manager, Mr. Brian Luck, walked the
participants through an arrangement where Big C outsources its product
distribution to DHL. Participants were acquainted with ‘Voice
Picking’ technology that sends commands for machine-operated package
delivery through voice recognition in a warehouse setting. The
logistical system is designed to accelerate efficiency, thereby
reducing costs for the end consumer, he told the participants.
Participants visited CPFDC, Chachoengsao, and BigC in Wangnoi,
Ayutthaya as a part of their training program.
Thailand is the first country in Southeast Asia to adopt the ‘Voice
Picking’ system, and one of the participants from Sri Lanka, Mr. Channa
Dhanesh, head of Supply Chain, Linea Aqual Private Limited, noted that
the system could be readily adopted in Sri Lanka.
Participants from Sri Lanka came from five Sri Lankan Ministries
including the Ministry of State Resources and Enterprise Development,
Ministry of Botanical Gardens and Public Recreation, Ministry of
Indigenous Medicine, Ministry of Petroleum Industries, and Ministry of
Higher Education. Other organizations which send their representatives
to participate in the program included the Department of Ayurveda, Sri
Lanka Army, Bank of Ceylon, Coconut Cultivation Board, Sri Lanka Cashew
Corporation, National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority,
University of Peradeniya, Jaykay Marketing Service Private Limited,
Linea Aqua Private Limited, Royal Ceramics Lanka PLC, Sri Lanka Telecom
PLC, and the Sri Lanka Foundation.
