160 undergraduate students welcomed at AIT

The largest cohort of 100 undergraduate students came from the South
Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine, Sri Lanka. Fifty students
from MCCi, Myanmar, and three from Nepal Education Foundation –
Consortium of Colleges, Nepal (NEF-CCN), were the other students who
entered the third year of studies at AIT, after having completed their
first two years in their home countries. Seven fresh students also
joined the first year of undergraduate programs, including four girls
(two from Bangladesh, one from Nepal, and one from China), and three
boys from Bhutan.

Welcoming the students, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs,
Prof. Sivanappan Kumar outlined the academic culture at AIT. AIT alumni
are placed at senior positions in governments, business, industry, and
international organizations; and you are on your way to join the 20,000
strong AIT alumni network, Prof. Kumar said. He identified three
critical issues for students -- AIT’s policy against plagiarism, the
Institute’s multicultural ethos, and student time management.

Prof. Kumar spoke about the emergence of the ASEAN Economic Community
(AEC), and stated that AIT provides a perfect platform for students to
play a role as Asian countries emerge as major global players.

Dr. Peeyush Soni of AIT’s School of Environment, Resources and
Development (SERD), while addressing students on behalf of his school,
expressed his delight at the latest batch of AIT students.

Dr. Matthew Dailey, Coordinator, Undergraduate Program walked the
students through the academic requirements of undergraduate programs.
Dr. Dailey highlighted that the top 20 per cent of students in each
field of study will be awarded a 50 per cent fellowship for the next
year.

Mr. Abhishek Bahadur Shah, President, AIT Student Union, invited the
new students to participate in student activities including the three
events in September -- welcome trip, mini marathon and the welcome
show. Mr. Ravinath Herath, Senior Program Officer, Undergraduate
Program was the emcee for the event.

The afternoon session of the Orientation program saw students being
acquainted to AIT procedures, language center services, student code of
conduct, AIT’s no-harassment policy, network facilities and internet
ethics, educational visa, student accommodation and facility
management.
