“The 20 matches will be equally shared between the Thailand Cricket
Ground (TCG) and Asian Institute of Technology Ground (AIT) with the
former holding the Trophy play-off as well as the final on 5 December
and the latter staging the Shield play-off and the final on the same
day,” a media release by the ICC said.
“This event will provide an opportunity to the Cricket Association of
Thailand (CAT) to promote and market the game in its territory, an
opportunity which will highlight the truly global appeal of the women's
game.,” said Clare Connor, the ICC women's committee chair and former
England captain. This is the second edition of the ICC Women’s World
Twenty20 Qualifier, after the 2013 event was hosted by Ireland.
Earlier AIT had played host to the eight nation 2010 Asian Cricket
Council (ACC) Trophy Challenge championships held from 4-11 December
2010. Two finalist teams, Maldives and Saudi Arabia qualified for the
elite International Cricket Council (ICC) qualifying tournament. The
World Cup finals was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand in
2015.
The eight teams that are competing include hosts Thailand, Bangladesh,
Scotland, Papua New Guinea (all in Group A); and Ireland, Netherlands,
China and Zimbabwe (in Group B).
The first match to be played at the AIT Grounds will be on 28 November
2015 when Ireland take on Netherlands during the morning hours,
followed by China taking on Zimbabwe the same afternoon.
ICC is the international governing body of cricket.ICC has 106
members, with 10 members enjoying the status of full members that play
test matches. There are 37 associate and 59 affiliate members. Thailand
got associate status in 2005. The ICC is responsible for the
organization and governance of cricket's major international
tournaments, with the Cricket World Cup. being the most
prominent.
AIT’s own cricket team comprising of students of many nationalities
has just won the Bangkok Cricket League ‘A’ Division in the finals held
at the AIT Cricket Ground on 17 May 2015. This was their third victory
in ‘A’ Division during the past five years. The AIT team had won the
‘A’ division in 2011 and 2013, and were semifinalists in 2012 and 2014
(third position).
