Dr Shobhakar Dhakal has been promoted to the rank of Professor. This follows approval by the Board of the Trustees at its meeting held on 31 January 2019.
Dr. Dhakal joined AIT as an Associate Professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) in July 2012.
He obtained his Ph.D. (Energy Management and Mitigation of Urban Heat Island) from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 2000. Dr. Dhakal took his Master of Engineering (M. Eng.) in Energy Policy and Planning from the Asian Institute of Technology in 1996. He earned his Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from the SV Regional College of Engineering and Technology, South Gujarat University, India in 1993. In addition, Dr. Dhakal was a Special Full Time Graduate Student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT, USA) Technology Policy and Planning Program and Dept. of Civil Engineering during the January-May 1999 semester.
Dr. Dhakal’s research encompasses the areas of energy and climate policy, system analysis, accounting of energy and carbon emissions, and mitigation opportunities. His particular interest are in the following inter-connected areas: Options and opportunities for low-energy and low-carbon cities and urbanization in era of rapid transformation and urbanization; Providing access to modern energy in developing countries in South and South-East Asia capitalizing on the potentials of the renewable energy technologies, declining cost of renewables and climate policy as a new vehicle; Addressing energy and climate mitigation solutions through innovative policies, governance and financial mechanisms; and Regional energy market integration in ASEAN and South Asia as a key to address multiple objectives such as better energy access, climate mitigation, enhancing energy security and up-scaling renewables.
