AIT student receives AGU Berkner Fellowship

Mr. Fakhruddin will present his paper at the 2013 AGU meeting of the
Americas to be held at Cancun, Mexico from 14-17 May 2013. The paper is
based on his Master’s research as a student of Water Engineering and
Management, at AIT’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET).

Supervised by Prof. Mukand Singh Babel of AIT, and Dr. Akiyuki
Kawasaki, visiting faculty at AIT of the University of Tokyo, the
research created a model to increase lead-time for flood forecasting in
Bangladesh. “Traditional models issue warnings only two days in
advance, while our model sought to increase this to 10 days,” he says.
The model is based on an ensemble of 51 datasets obtained from the
European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), he
added.

The Lloyd V Berkner Travel Fellowship is aimed at early career
scientists and students to enable them to present their research at AGU
meetings. This program serves as a memorial to former AGU President
Lloyd V. Berkner.
