AIT faculty member co-authors book on Natural Hazards Management in Asia

A faculty member of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Dr. Indrajit Pal, has co-authored a book on “Natural Hazards Management in Asia.” Published by Sage Publications, the book is a study on how natural hazards convert into disasters.

Focusing on Asian countries, it takes a holistic view of the subject and discusses different concepts of disaster management covering both theory and practice, Dr. Indrajit Pal says. “The book also explains best practices and the most effective tools for alleviating the consequences of such disasters,” he adds.

The book has been jointly written by Dr. Indrajit Pal and Dr. Tuhin Ghosh. While Dr. Indrajit Pal is an Assistant Professor in Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management in AIT’s School of Environment, Resources and Development; Dr. Tuhin Ghosh is an Associate Professor at the School of Oceanographic Studies, Jadavpur University, India.

The book provides an insight into the impact of natural disasters on human life, infrastructure and the economy, and it analyzes mitigation strategies while analyzing numerous case studies. Policies and laws that govern disaster management are also outlined in the book.

Topics covered in the publication include natural hazards classification, risk, vulnerability, mitigation, modern technology in disaster management, overview of disaster management mechanism in Asian countries, response, relief, reconstruction, rehabilitation and resilience, natural disaster risk governance, and tools and techniques in disaster management.
