Welcoming the students, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA)
Prof. Sivanappan Kumar stated that the new batch joins the over 400
students who have enrolled in AIT in August 2013 in postgraduate and
doctoral programs.
AIT is international not just in name, but also in spirit, Prof. Kumar
said, as he mentioned that barring Australia, AIT has students from all
continents. Prof. Kumar added that AIT alumni are occupying senior
positions in the public sector, private sector, academic and
international organizations all over the world. He stated that the
success of AIT is measured by the success of its students, as he asked
them to take full advantage of AIT’s expertise.
The 155 students come from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bhutan, India, Japan
and Thailand. Out of them, 114 have already completed their first two
years at the South Asian Institute of Medicine (SAITM), Sri Lanka, and
they will attend the third year of their undergraduate program at AIT.
Another 30 students come from Myanmar Computer Company (MCCi), Myanmar.
One exchange student is joining from Japan. A quarter of the incoming
students are female.
Addressing the students, Dr. Sangam Shrestha, Associate Dean, School
of Engineering and Technology (SET) stated that there is a growing
demand of engineers in the region, as youngsters of today are being
called upon to offer solutions to emerging global problems. He added
that AIT has always remained at the forefront in technology, and that
the first “dot th” domain name was registered at AIT. AIT’s Vice
President for Research, Prof. Kanchana Kanchanasut has recently been
inducted in the Internet Hall of Fame, he added.
Mr. Ko Ko Lwin, Student Union President highlighted the activities of
the AIT Student Union and asked incoming students to participate in all
AIT activities. Prof. Louis Gabor Hornyak, Director, Center for
Learning Innovation and Quality (CLIQ) was the Master of Ceremonies
during the morning session.
Incoming students were also introduced to Undergraduate Programs and
Academic Requirements by Dr. Matthew N. Dailey, Coordinator,
Undergraduate Program. Dr. Dailey and Dr. Teerapat Saengudomlert
introduced the students to Information and Communication Technology,
Telecommunication, Computer Science and Information System Programs;
while Dr. Huynh Trung Luong introduced the students to Mechatronics,
Electronics and Industrial Engineering Programs. Dr. Sangam Shrestha
introduced the students to Civil and Infrastructure Engineering
Programs.
The afternoon session witnessed presentations on “AIT No Harassment
Policy” by Dr. Donyapruet Krairit, Chair, Gender Equality Committee and
Acting Dean of the School of Management. Mr. Thomas Hamilton, Acting
Head, Language Center informed the students on Language Center Services
and the English Language Requirements. Prof. Hornyak introduced the
students to Academic Quality, while Dr. Agus Harianta of IT Services
informed students about the “Use of SIS.” Ms. Laarni B. Roa, Head,
Student Office spoke about Student Code of Conduct and Ethical
Standards, while Ms. Joan Carla Gonzales, Coordinator, Student Affairs
Unit and Career Center informed the students from Student Welfare,
Placement and Counseling Services and Medical Services. Ms. Suda Inta,
Administrative Officer, Government Relations Unit spoke about
Educational Visa and Government Relations Services, while Ms. Napha of
Sodexo spoke about Student Accommodation and Facility Management. Mr.
Tenzin Rabgyal was the Master of Ceremonies for the afternoon
session.
