Bangkok Post.

Mr. Apichatabutrd remarked that he was glad that AIT was involved in
the issue of MDGs. He appreciated the work done by AIT, particularly as
a center of education among ASEAN nations. This workshop is an
important platform where all countries within the ASEAN region can work
together, he added. In his welcome remarks at the workshop Mr.
Apichatabutrd mentioned the progress made by Thailand in removal of
poverty, and the initiatives of H.M. the King of Thailand in helping
raise the standard of living of people involved in agriculture.

Mr. Nicholas Rosellini, Deputy Regional Director, Regional Bureau for
Asia and the Pacific, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said
that the timing of the workshop was good, since it followed the
Millennium Summit held in New York, where all the countries, including
ASEAN, had recommitted themselves towards the achievement of MDGs.
Referring to the role of AIT, Mr. Rosellini stated that it is important
that AIT is working on issues to do with MDGs. “It is important that,
within the region we have knowledge resources, centers of excellence
and academic institutions that look into issues that affect people.”

Dr. Sandro Calvani, Director, Director of the ASEAN Regional Centre of
Excellence on Millennium Development Goals (ARCMDG), stressed the role
that AIT could play by stating that as an academic institution, AIT can
make a big difference by identification and sharing of best practices,
apart from organizing advanced training programs. “ARCMDG is one of the
Centers of Excellence at AIT, and we can exploit capacity of our
faculty members towards this goal,” he added.

The two-day workshop was organized by ASEAN secretariat, Ministry of
Interior of Thailand and UNDP, with cooperation from ARCMDG.
