The book release ceremony took place at the symposium "Third national
symposium on challenges and opportunities for sustainable management of
the groundwater resources of the Kathmandu Valley," which was organized
on 22 March 2012, to coincide with the water week celebrations.
Dr. Shrestha works as an Assistant Professor in Water Engineering and
Management (WEM) field of study, at AIT’s School of Engineering and
Technology.
The book was launched by Ms. Bindra Hada, the Secretary of Ministry of
Irrigation, Nepal, during the inaugural session of the symposium. She
described the publication as very timely, since the Ministry of
Irrigation is planning to formulate new acts and regulations related to
groundwater in Nepal. Facts and findings of this book will be useful
for undertaking necessary interventions, she added. Mr. Niranjan
Lacoul, Joint Secretary, Water and Energy Commission Secretariat
(WECS), and Mr. Mahendra Bahadur Gurung, Joint Secretary, Ministry of
Irrigation, also highlighted the importance of book.
The book is jointly published by Asian Institute of Technology (AIT),
The Small Earth Nepal (SEN), Center of Research for Environment Energy
and Water (CREEW) and University of Yamanashi, Japan. “The book seeks
to prioritize present issues related to groundwater in the Kathmandu
Valley, reclaim available information and baseline data, compile the
latest scientific understanding, and organize them within a single
volume,” Dr. Shrestha says.
