General Declaration of Understanding inked between AIT, CIRAD and University of La Réunion, France

General Declaration of Understanding inked between AIT, CIRAD and University of La Réunion, France
The tripartite General Declaration of
Understanding, signed on behalf of AIT by Prof. Sudip Rakshit, Vice
President for Research, expresses the intention to collaborate on a
number of fronts, including academic exchanges of scientists and
faculty, joint research, student mobility, joint thesis, publications,
and will explore the possibility of a joint master’s program,
especially one on ecological intensification research.

Prof. Rakshit led the AIT
delegation from 4-9 April 2011 to Reunion that included Prof. Ajit
Annachatre (EEM), Dr. Wenresti Gallardo (AARM), Dr. Manzul Hazarika
(Geoinformatics Center) and Dr. Lionel Dabbadie (CIRAD seconded faculty
to AARM). Mr. Olivier Dréan, Coordinator of AIT-French Collaboration,
facilitated the mission.

Réunion is located east of Madagascar
and west of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. As a French Department,
it is territory of the European Union. The officials visited a
number of laboratories and research centers, including CIRAD,
University of Reunion Island, Research Institute for Development (IRD),
Qualitropic (Reunion's competitiveness cluster for agri-nutrition in
the tropics), Reunion Association for the Development of Aquaculture
(ARDA), and the Regional Council of Reunion Island.

Research conducted at the Reunion
Island institutions matches the standard of work done at labs in
mainland France, the hosts said. ARDA has also expressed
willingness to host a thesis student to work on aquaponics, with the
support of CIRAD. "Organic supplies and environmental impacts” is
another research area that CIRAD is considering to support.

AIT has enjoyed a long history of
partnership with CIRAD, previously signing four memorandum of agreement
and one general memorandum of agreement. The trip was a follow up to a
visit to AIT in 2009 by Dr. Gilles Mandret , Regional Director of CIRAD
in Reunion Island and Mayotte, and Prof. Mohamed Rochdi, President
University of La Réunion.
