Sri Lanka has become the fourth country to ratify the new AIT Charter and submit the Instrument of Acceptance to the Royal Thai Government. Sri Lanka follows Japan, Sweden and India in ratifying the Charter.
The Instrument of Acceptance of Sri Lanka was received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of the Royal Thai Government on 21 June 2011.Sri Lanka was one of the original signatories of the new AIT Charter. On 25 August 2010, the new Charter was signed by 12 countries and one International organization. Subsequently, Indonesia also signed the Charter on 20 January 2011. The new Charter becomes effective within six months of ratification by five signatories. The Charter remains
open for signatories for a period of one year since its initial adoption.

Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to Thailand, H.E. Prof. J.B.Disanayaka, had signed the AIT Charter on 25 August 2010.
So far 13 countries and one international organization have signed the new AIT Charter. These include Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Timor-Leste, Thailand and UNIFEM (now called UN Women).
