Identification of topics of common interest for EU and SEA partners in
the thematic “Food Quality, Safety & Traceability” toward a
strengthening of S&T collaboration between SE Asia and EU in the
FP7 programmes
Food safety experts from the European Union (EU) and Southeast Asia
(SEA) participated in a meeting from 24-27 February 2009 at the Asian
Institute of Technology (AIT) to discuss hot topics concerning Food
Quality, Safety & Tracebility.
The meeting was opened and precided by Prof. Sudip
Rakshit, Vice President for Research, AIT. Among other
distinguished guests are Mr. Maurice Siveton, Regional
Counselor for cooperation at the French Embassy in Thailand;
Mr. Samuel Cantell, First Secretary at the EU
Delegation in Bangkok; and Dr. Didier Montet and
Mr. Sloan Saletes from French Agricultural Research
Center for International Development (CIRAD). All five served as
panelists during the opening ceremony.

The meeting aimed to collect valid inputs to Programme Directorates on
S&T potentials and mutually beneficial researches with EU – SEA
interest in the thematic area of “Food safety”. This
meeting also was a platform to consider the specific needs of the SEA
partner countries. The meeting aimed to produce a comprehensive
document containing duly justified proposals for Specific International
Cooperation Actions (SICA), including key topics for cooperation
corresponding to FP7’s thematic priorities. Some of the proposed topics
included were revisions of the thematic work programs through Specific
International Cooperation Actions – SICA, dedicated to SEA (year 2011
and beyond).
Topics that were covered range from bacteria antibioresistance,
mycotoxins, pathogens (bacteria), pesticides, heavy metals, food
traceability, food supply chain, preserving nutrients, consumer
attitudes, socio-economy, and peri-urban markets and food
supply.
Programme officials of notable food safely projects and representatives
from the food industrial sector also joined this event.
The round table was composed of
selected experts in the field of food safety.
