The Asian Institute of Technology has been awarded India’s Institute of Road Traffic Education and the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award 2006 for contributions toward road safety in Thailand.

The award cites the academic leadership of the late Prof. Yordphol Tanaboriboon of the School of Engineering and Technology’s Transportation Engineering field of study. He helped develop the basis of accident investigation and catalyzing road safety in Thailand. The panel of international judges recommended that the award should be presented to AIT in his memory.

The award ceremony was held 12 January, 2007, in New Delhi, India. Mr. Sattrawut Ponboon, a research associate at the AIT-based Thailand Accident Research Center (TARC), and a former student of Prof. Yordphol, received the award on behalf of AIT and TARC.

The Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) is a nonprofit organization formed in 1991 to make India’s roads safer. Its members include educators, doctors, journalists, engineers, ex-servicemen, architects, automobile experts and members of the police.

The IRTE National Road Safety Awards were instituted in 2000 to acknowledge individuals and organizations that help develop positive road culture in traffic management and road safety in India. The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award (U.K.) recognizes achievements and innovations for improvement in road safety. Instituted in 1987, the awards publicly recognize those who have made outstanding achievements and innovations worldwide. The two awards joined together in 2002.
