Dr. Sylvain Perret has been seconded to AIT from 1 January 2007 as a visiting associate professor, attached to both SERD and the School of Engineering and Technology.

Dr. Perret is a senior researcher at CIRAD (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement), a French cooperation organization specialized in research and high education in agriculture, food processing and biotechnologies, rural issues, renewable natural resources and the environment, towards sustainable development and poverty reduction.

Dr. Perret has 20-year experience in agronomy, socio-economics, and natural resource management in various developing countries, mostly in Africa. He just completed an eight-year secondment at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where he developed research activities onto water governance, and the complex interplay between social dynamics, policies, economics, and institutions in water management.

Dr. Perret also recently developed and implemented approaches and tools combining action-research and modeling to address various water related issues, e.g. the economic viability of smallholder irrigation schemes, the integrated and multifunctional nature of wetlands, the inter-sectoral allocation of water. These examples included integrated and multidisciplinary modeling, and participatory scenario-testing as ways to understand complex processes, to share and strengthen knowledge among local stakeholders, to support decision-making and to investigate alternatives and solutions.

He can be contacted in room E129, SERD Academic building, Ext. 6429, e-mail:
