Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering, has been elected as Chairman of the East Asia-Pacific Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction (EASEC) International Steering Committee. He will serve a four-year term from 2002 to 2005. Former AIT faculty member Prof. Koichi Maekawa from the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Tokyo will serve as General Secretary. Founded in 1986, the EASEC Conference was conceptualized by AIT's former Vice President for Academic Affairs, Prof. Fumio Nishino. Prof. Worsak organized the first conference (EASEC-1) in Bangkok in his capacity as General Secretary. Subsequent conferences were hosted by member Asia-Pacific countries, on a rotating basis. The biennial series of EASEC conferences is regularly attended by over 400 researchers and professional engineers. These have been hosted in Chiang Mai, Shanghai, Seoul, Gold Coast (Australia), Taipei, Kochi and Singapore. EASEC-9 will be held in Bali, Indonesia in 2003.
