Indian Ambassador visits AIT

H.E. Ms. Vijaya Latha Reddy, Ambassador of India to Thailand and AIT trustee visited AIT on 13 February, and was accompanied by Mr. Abhijit Chakravertty, Counsellor (information and culture). Ambassador Reddy met with members of the administration, Indian faculty, and representatives of the staff and students.

H.E. Ambassador Reddy assured AIT of her full support in further looking into issues discussed such as the increase in the financial support provided by the government to the Institute; linkages with the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Thai-Indian Business Forum in order to enhance private sector participation and engagement with AIT; featuring AIT link on the Indian Embassy website; facilitation of visits to AIT by peer scientists, lecturers and cultural troupes; possibilities for airline discount and baggage concession for students; placements and internships for students in industry etc.

H.E. Ambassador Reddy recommended that AIT invite officials from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, which is the government agency in India looking after the cooperation with AIT, in order for them to witness first hand the work being conducted by AIT, and also towards exploring areas in which the partnership with India could be broadened.

The possibility of AIT providing a neutral platform for the free academic exchange of views on the free trade agreement discussions between India and Thailand was welcomed by the Ambassador, and a suggestion put forward that this could form part of the events being planned in 2007 in celebration of 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and Thailand. The issues discussed will be further taken up by the AIT-India Task Force.
