Dr. S. M. Qureshi and Dr. Srisook to speak at AIT's 103rd Graduation
Dr. Shamsuddin M. Qureshi, Chairman of the Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee, Education Department of the Government of Sindh, Karachi, Pakistan and , Chairman of the Board of the Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, and the New Bangkok International Airport Company Limited will be the distinguished speakers at AIT's 103rd commencement exercises to be held on Friday, 27 May 2005 at the AIT Conference Center.
Dr. Qureshi (left), an accomplished professional, was educated at AIT, then called the SEATO Graduate School of Engineering in 1965, and at the University of Sheffield, U.K. in 1971, specializing in Structural Engineering.
His illustrious career in engineering and technology is reflected in his academic achievements and outstanding services towards the promotion of engineering and technology in Pakistan. He played a key role in the establishment of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology in 1977, serving as Vice Chancellor for almost a decade. This has helped build a strong foundation for Pakistani students, many of whom are AIT alumni or are currently enrolled at AIT, nine students are receiving their degrees on 27 May 2005.
As a well-rounded academician and administrator, Dr Qureshi was appointed to serve as Secretary to the government of Pakistan. This enabled him to share his professional expertise and experiences through the handling of various ministries such as Education, Youth Affairs, Housing and Works, and Science and Technology. In 1999, he was appointed as Chairman to the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology and Secretary to the National Commission for Science and Technology.
In appreciation for notable services rendered in establishing Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Dr Qureshi was awarded a 'Gold Medal' by the Governor of Sindh and Chancellor of Mehran University in 1992, and by the Mehran University Alumni Association in 1997. He was also bestowed 'Distinguished Alumni Award' by the AIT Alumni Association in recognition for his distinguished services in the public sector, to the continued development of Pakistan and the betterment of Pakistani people. In 2001, Dr Qureshi, was conferred the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' by the Pakistan Engineering Council in recognition of his lifetime devotion and remarkable achievements in overall engineering profession, education, research and practice.
Dr. Qureshi will deliver his address in the morning to graduands of SCE and SERD. SCE students on that day will account to a total of 116 graduates (7 doctoral and 109 master) and SERD a total of 180 graduates (6 doctoral, 172 master, 2 diploma).
Dr. Srisook Chandrangsu, Chairman of the Board of the Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, and the New Bangkok International Airport Company Limited will deliver his address in the afternoon of the same day to graduands of SOM and SAT. SOM students on that day will account to a total of 110 graduates (4 doctoral and 106 master) and SAT a total of 167 graduates (10 doctoral, 156 master, 1 diploma).
Dr. Srisook (right) is an alumnus of AIT, who obtained his Master of Engineering in 1969 from the then SEATO Graduate School of Engineering, in the field of Transportation Engineering, and his Ph.D. in Transportation Systems Planning from the Ohio State University in 1973.
His career history clearly manifests his devotion and commitment to share and apply his knowledge and expertise for the progress of this country Thailand in the field of communication and transportation. He has committed his prime productive years in serving his country through the Ministry of Transport and Communications, his tenure lasting for almost 26 years, serving in various positions such as Director of Transport and Communications Committee Services Division, Director of the Department of Highway, Director of Transport and Communications Economic Division, Inspector-General, Director-General of the Department of Aviation, and Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
As Chairman of the Board of the Airports Authority of Thailand Public Company Limited, he plays a very important role in the economic development of Thailand by promoting Bangkok International Airport as the central aviation hub for Southeast Asia. This is remarkably affirmed by Dr Srisook's involvement as Chairman of the Board Directors of the New Bangkok International Airport Company Limited, which is in-charge of the completion of the Suvarnabhumi Airport, envisioned to be Thailand's premier international air transportation gateway and regional centre for aviation that will actively support Thailand's travel and tourism development.
In recognition of his remarkable achievements and distinguished services in the public sector for the economic development of Thailand, he was bestowed the 'Distinguished AIT Alumni in Governmental Services' in 2003 by the AIT Alumni Association.
AIT's 103rd graduation will bring a total number of 13,841 alumni, with the largest number of 4,054 coming from Thailand.
