First [v]thesis Awards Night

In a well-deserved victory, two
graduating students from the School of Engineering tied for the much
coveted first prize award in AIT’s inaugural video competition
highlighting research.

[v]thesis, AIT’s newest initiative from
a joint effort by the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs
(VPAA), the Student Union (SU) and the Promotional Support &
Services Unit (PSSU), was launched on 20 May 2008 at the Milton Bender
auditorium.

Eight graduating students answered the
call for videos with creative visual interpretations of their
researches. The eight contestants were dubbed as the first "AIT Film
Makers".

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Vice
President Prof. Peter Haddawy, who was the proponent of the project. He
explained that the ability to convey an idea or research in a clear,
concise and entertaining way is an important skill for all students to
master as they prepare to enter the workforce.

After the film showings, AIT’s new
YouTube site was presented for the very first time to the audience of
over fifty. The winning entries have been uploaded to the site and
plans call for more to be added in the future. To view the top three
films, please go to http://www.youtube.com/aitasia

A crowd-pleasing part of the program was
the Beach Hut's People's Choice Awards, in which the audience was
requested to rate their favorite videos through cheers. Out of the
eight contestants, Indian Mohammad Khalandar Khan's research on
Bluetooth and GPRS to calculate the real-time schedules of bus fleets
was clearly the most popular. The video was co-conceptualized and
co-produced by his team-mate Itesh Dash. Nepal’s Bishnu Acharya's entry
came at close second and Petrus Sutyasadi from Indonesia finished
third.

Prof. Peter Haddawy congratulated
winners Petrus Sutyasadi and Mohammad Khalandar Khan's for their
success at communicating their messages within the 3-minute time frame.
Mohammad Khalandar Khan is currently the media affairs officer at the
Student Union, while Petrus Sutyasadi, is a mechatronics engineering
student studying under the guidance of Dr. Manukid Parnichkun.

Next year promises to be an even bigger
event!
