I wish to extend our sincere gratitude
to Your Excellencies and honored guests for your presence which means a
lot to AIT and our graduands.

I encourage all graduands to reflect on what you have gained as a
person, the values you have come to appreciate and realizations that
changed some of your perspectives through your learning and living at
AIT. I believe that your interaction with close to fifty different
nationalities within the AIT community has deepened your understanding
of yourself and of others.

I challenge you to bring back with you, to your respective countries -
not only your knowledge and skills - but also the great spirit of
international understanding and friendship. For if you do, you
will have contributed to the promotion of peace and understanding in
this region and beyond.

You will walk out of here today with only one thing that no one else
has. There will be hundreds of people out there with similar degrees;
there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a
living. A university degree is by no means a guarantee of success in
life. It is all too easy to fall prey to the notion that social
status and occupational position derives from the academic degrees
accumulated. It is not the degree, but what you do with it, that
counts.

However, you will be the only person alive who has sole custody
of your life. Not just the life of your minds, but the life of your
heart - your soul. Nelson Mandela once quoted, "Our deepest
fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are
powerful beyond measure
." This in essence means that you not only
have control over your own life but also the power to make a difference
in other peoples' lives.

Try not to follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where
there is no path and leave a trail.  If you have observed a
turtle, you will notice that in order for it to move, it has to stick
its neck out. There are going to be times in your life when you are
going to have to stick your neck out. There will be challenges and
instead of hiding in a shell, you have to go out and meet them. Here
you could learn in the classrooms. There the classroom is everywhere.
Education must be a life-long process both in and out of the
university.

I am confident that all of you will into the future take up leadership
positions in your different professions and careers. Always remember
that those in the position of leadership must set an example and show
integrity, responsibility, vision and vigour – qualities which I
believe AIT has instilled in all of you – and is the very essence of
good governance. To quote Mahatma Gandhi: “Happiness is when what
you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony
.”

Your preparation for the real world is not in the answers you've
learned, but in the questions you've learned how to ask yourself.
Graduating from AIT, I am confident you'll find yourselves quite well
prepared indeed.

I wish you all fulfillment and happiness. On behalf of AIT and all our
partners present with us on stage, I would like to once again
congratulate you on your achievements. Be proud to be an AITian
and we are sure you will make us proud where ever you go.”

Thank you.
