RTG FELLOWSHIPS AT AIT
Under its Budgetary Support to AIT for FY 2003, the Royal Thai Government is providing THB 76,716,640 as RTG Fellowships for Master's and Doctoral students enrolled at the Asian Institute of Technology in its academic intakes for January 2003 and August 2003. For the August 2003 intake, 155 master's fellowships and at least six doctoral fellowships will be offered.
The RTG Fellowships Program is an on-going program to accelerate Thailand's human resources development in science and technology with the aim of producing a critical mass of scientists and engineers able to serve as leaders and key players in Thailand's sustainable development. At the same time, AIT could also bridge to promote sustainable development efforts of countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion, and possibly other targeted countries, through human resources development. A small portion of this budget may, therefore, be also allocated for this purpose.
The RTG Fellowships Program is expected to enable a wide pool of qualified Thai students as well as some GMS students to benefit from higher education at AIT. The program will help to meet a portion of the educational fees of the students at AIT. In this way, the budget can be used to support as many students as possible to accelerate Thailand and the region's human resources development in science and technology fields. At the same time, this will be an effective way to curb the outflow of currency and brain drain.
Who is eligible to apply?
Qualified applicants as well as some GMS students, meeting the entry requirements for admission to AIT are eligible to apply for the RTG Fellowships. For the master's fellowships, the minimum CGPA in the undergraduate degree should be 2.75 or above. For the doctoral fellowships, applicants should have undergraduate CGPA of 3.00 or above and graduate grades significantly above average with CGPA of 3.5 or above.
RTG Semester Fellowships
With the change of the AIT academic system from trimester to semester starting August 2003, the RTG Fellowships will be offered on semester basis to cover tuition fees for fixed number of credits and registration fees during the semesters covered by the fellowships.
Master's Degree Program
The RTG master's fellowships will cover tuition fees for the last 30 credits plus registration fees for the 3rd and 4th semesters of the master's study program. Each student will have to pay US$ 6,250 to cover the registration fees for the first two semesters and tuition fees for the first 18 credited enrolled.
The value of one RTG master's fellowship amounts to US$ 10,150 covers:
Tuition fee (US$ 325/credit x 30 credits) = US$ 9,750
Registration fee (US$ 200/semesters x 2 semesters) = US$ 400
Total per semester = US$ 10,150
The 155 RTG master's fellowships will be offered in the four schools: SAT (33), SCE (48), SERD (49) and SOM (25)
Doctoral Program
The RTG doctoral fellowships will cover tuition fees for the last 56-credit fellowship plus registration fees for the 3rd to 6th semesters of the doctoral study program. Each student will have to pay US$ 9,500 to cover registration fees for the first two semesters and tuition fees for the first 28 credits enrolled.
The value for one RTG doctoral fellowship is US$ 19,000 covers:
Tuition fee (US$ 325/credits x 56 credits) = US$ 18,200
Registration fee (US$ 200/semester x 4 semesters) = US$ 800
Total per semester = US$ 19,000
Two doctoral fellowships each will be offered in SAT, SCE, and SOM.
Due to the lower study fees of the semester system, the RTG budgetary grant can also cover three additional doctoral half-fellowships (one each in SAT, SCE and SOM) providing tuition support for the last 28 credits and registration fees for the last two semesters of the doctoral program. Each student will have to pay US$ 19,000 to cover the registration fees for the first four semesters and tuition fees for the first 56 credits enrolled.
