AIT alumnus receives doctorate from Australian university

Dr. Eric Ruiz, an AIT alumnus (WRE '92) and former Information Scientist of IFIC, graduated in March 2006 with a PhD in Civil Engineering from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia. An Australian citizen, Dr. Ruiz was in receipt of an Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship grant and completed his thesis entitled 'Integrating subsurface ocean temperatures in the statistical prediction of ENSO and Australian rainfall and streamflow'. Results of his study showed that forecasting models that incorporate thermocline or subsurface ocean information produce more skilful long-term projections of ENSO, rainfall and streamflow than models that use only sea surface temperatures.

Out of his PhD work, Dr. Ruiz received a Student Commendation Award for his paper during the MODSIM 2003 Conference and had four journal papers published by prestigious international publications.

Dr Ruiz obtained his Master's degree in Civil Engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in August 1992, specialising in Water Resources Development. He completed his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of San Carlos (USC) in March 1988 in Cebu City, Philippines.
