SEA-UEMA holds First Policy Forum on Urban Environmental Management in Southeast Asia
The Southeast Asia Urban Environmental Management Applications (SEA-UEMA) Project, a 5-year partnership between the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), recently conducted the First Policy Forum on Urban Environmental Management in Southeast Asia. The event was held from 18 to 19 August 2005, at the AIT Conference Center.

The opening ceremony were attended by Mr. David Yasui, CIDA representative; Mr. Rae Kwon Chung, Chief of ESDD/UNESCAP and H.E. Yongyut Tiyapairat, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) Thailand. Prof. Said Irandoust, AIT President delivered the welcome address on behalf of AIT.

An estimated 60 participants including resource speakers joined the Policy Forum. Participants who came were policy makers and implementors in Southeast Asian countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam) who are (1) directly involved in urban environmental management policies, particularly on water and sanitation, solid waste management and air pollution, and (2) who are working in city authorities, government agencies, NGOs, academic and research institutions, and other organizations in the region.

The forum aims to identify and discuss policy options for addressing urban environmental issues in the area of air pollution, water and sanitation, and solid waste management based on the experiences of different Southeast Asian countries.
