AIT President Said Irandoust delivered the
opening remarks for the “Organic Symposium and Regional Workshop”, an
event that was organized by AIT in partnership with the National
Innovation Agency (NIA), Ministry of Science and Technology Thailand
and the Thai Organic Trade Association (TOTA). The activity was opened
on Monday, 8 September 2008 with prominent guests such as H.E. Dr.
Suchinda Chotipanich, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and
Technology, Thailand, and Dr. Supachai Lorlowhakarn, Director, NIA
joining the initiative.
International authorities, organic agriculture experts, experienced
organic traders, resource persons from certification organizations and
health concerned audiences attended the event. Important
recommendations were made on application and promotion of organic
agriculture within the South East Asian region including the following
countries Malaysia, Vietnam, Lao People's Democratic Republic,
Philippines, Myanmar, Indonesia and Thailand.
AIT is one of the pioneer organizations in Thailand spearheading the
efforts in organic farming. A detailed study report, prepared by AIT
researchers from 2003 to 2005, served as the basis for formulating and
deploying organic policies in Thailand. NIA has been commissioned to
continue enhancing the image of Thailand in the organic market. One
major obstacle is lack of advisory and certification services. AIT has
joined hands with NIA to work towards achieving this goal by networking
with local partners and key players in the region.
The Government of Thailand has indicated investing in the research and
development of bio-plastics and organic farming. AIT and NIA will
continue to discuss partnerships and establishment of a common platform
which to administer the two programs in Thailand.
