The School of Civil Engineering welcomes the following faculty and researcher in the August 2003 term.
With a doctorate in transport planning from MIT and widespread research, consulting and teaching experience, Dr. Jonathan Richmond (right), is a transport planner with broad interests, from the evaluation of both large-scale capital projects and conventional techniques of planning modeling to the
design of effective organizations capable of implementing high-quality transport planning. Concerned about the development of city transit
systems and management of urban transport problems of mobility, equity, congestion, and other environmental issues, he has come to AIT to gain an
Asian perspective on these issues and to help train an Asian leadership to grapple with these problems after they leave AIT.
In addition to various academic posts, Dr. Richmond has advised the Government of Mauritius on the development of a long-term strategic transport plan (project for World Bank), held the post of Visiting Chair at the University of Sydney, and served as advisor to the Chair of the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission. He was a Fellow at Harvard University and has held teaching posts at the University of Sydney, University of Reading, University of California (Los Angeles), and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Prof. Richmond completed his Master of Science in Transportation and his interdepartmental Ph. D. program in Transportation Planning from
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He did his B.Sc. (Economics) at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Dr. Richmond is currently teaching a course entitled 'Public Transportation Systems' at AIT, and will develop new courses to specifically address developing country transport issues. His
office is in Room N260B and he can be reached at telephone extension 5510 or e-mail: richmond@ait.ac.th
Prof. Elisha Zeev Tatsa (left) was appointed as Visiting Professor in the Structural Engineering field of study. Prof. Tatsa will be at the Institute during the periods of 26 January to 28 February 2003 and from 1 July 2003 to 30 September 2003. Aside from supporting the Structural Engineering faculty, his appointment will allow him to teach at the Master of Professional Engineering Program (MPE) in Hanoi (Vietnam) and be involved in other academic activities.
Prof. Tatsa obtained his Bachelor of Science degree, Diploma in Engineering, Master of Science and Doctorate degrees in Structural Engineering from Technion Institute of Technology (Israel).
Before being affiliated with AIT, first as a Fellow in 1996 and then as Visiting Faculty, Prof. Tatsa was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA), and a Visiting Professor at the University of Sydney (Australia). He holds more than 30 years of teaching experience being at Technion from 1968 to 1978 and then from 1988 to 1996. In between his teaching stint at Technion, Prof. Tatsa taught at the University of Sheffield (UK) in 1974 and at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1978 to 1980.
Prof. Tatsa can be contacted at Room E230, North Academic Building, ext 5540, or e-mail: tatsae@ait.ac.th
Dr. Shinya Hanaoka (right) joined the School of Civil Engineering as a direct-hire Lecturer in July 2003. He received his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Tohoku University in 1994 and completed his master's and doctoral degrees at the Graduate School of Information Services (GSIS) in the same university. Dr. Hanaoka received his Doctor of Information Sciences in 1999. After completing his doctoral degree, Dr. Hanaoka worked at the Institute for Transport Policy Studies (ITPS) in Tokyo for four years. Since 2000, he was with the Saitama University as Visiting Lecturer teaching Transport Planning. In 2002, he spent six months as a Visiting Researcher at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds in England where he worked on a project evaluating transport policy instruments and measures.
At AIT, Dr. Hanaoka will teach Urban Regional Transport Analysis and Planning Methods. He can be contacted at Room N260a, North Academic Building, ext 5681 or e-mail: hanaoka@ait.ac.th
Dr. Dushmanta Dutta (left) joined the School of Civil Engineering in June 2003 as a Visiting Associate Professor under a two-year secondment from the University of Tokyo (Japan) where he works with the International Center for Urban Safety Engineering (ICUS) in the Institute of Industrial Science. Dr. Dutta received his B. Eng. in Civil Engineering (with first class honors) from Dibrugarh University (India) in 1991. In 1992, he received a scholarship to pursue a master's degree in Water Resources Engineering (now Water Engineering and Management). In 1995, he joined the International Center for Disaster Mitigation Engineering (INCEDE) at the University of Tokyo (UT) as a Research Associate. A year after joining INCEDE, he started his doctoral studies at UT, which he completed in 1999.
