SCE CONFERENCE

SCE CONFERENCE

Conference at AIT

The School of Civil Engineering will organize a seminar on 'Ready
for Intelligent Optimal Design?' , on Tuesday, 20 June
from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. at the RCC Auditorium, to be conducted by Prof. Joseph ZARKA (E-mail: zarka@lms.polytechnique.fr), Laboratoire de Mecanique des Solides,
Ecole Polytechnique, 91128 Palaiseau (France).

Engineers face important problems in designing, testing,
surveying and maintaining structures. These problems
concern the unsatisfactory constitutive modeling of materials, lack of real control
of the accuracy of numerical simulations, lack of real definition of the
initial state and/or the effective loading of the structure.

This seminar proposes a practical solution - 'Intelligent
Optimal Design of Structures', in which the actual/best knowledge of researchers/experts
are intelligently mixed to obtain the results of experiments or real returns.
Some examples of applications in civil engineering will be presented to
explain the real meaning and power of this approach.

About Prof. Zarka

Prof. Joseph Zarka was a part time visiting scientist at UCSD's CEAM and
Scientific Director of CETIM (1981-86), the research center
of French mechanical industries. Since 1986, he has participated in developing
several consultant companies, such as CADLM (a research center
for mechanical, civil engineering, transportation, off-shore and military
industries), where he is Scientific Director of the Department of 'Intelligent
Optimal Design of Materials and Structures'.

Prof. Zarka's current research interests are towards a new approach for intelligent
optimal design of materials and structures, control of fabrication and
survey of structures. He has been recently elected Fellow of ASME. He belongs
to the editorial boards of Mechanics of Materials (USA), Structural Engineering;
Mechanics (Korea). He has co-edited three books in English with S. Nemat-Nasser,
J. Gittus and some of his co-workers. Prof. Zarka has published over one hundred
scientific papers and has presented over one hundred lectures internationally.

Note:

Students in the Structural Engineering and Construction Program are
expected to attend. The Seminar class (CE01.96) scheduled on the same
day from 3:00 to 4:00 is cancelled. All SCE students and faculty are also
requested to attend the seminar. For further details, please contact:
Ms. Ann Lopez at 524-6422 or Ms. Woranuch at 524-6052.
