Members from the Ministry of Science and Technology, India, led by Mr. Amitabha Pande, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, visited AIT after attending Map Asia 2002 conference recently held in Bangkok. The other members from the Ministry were: Dr. R. Siva Kumar, Head, NRDMS &NSDI; Division, Ministry of Science and Technology Brigadier M.V. Bhat, Director, Survey Training Institute, India; Dr. P. Venkatraman, Advisor, Media Lab Asia, India, DST; Dr. D. Dutta, Department of Science and Technology (DST); Dr. P. S. Acharya, Advisor, Department of Science and Technology (DST). The members from the Ministry met AIT high-ranking officials, led by Prof. Mario T. Tabucanon, Provost, and discussed on possible academic cooperation.

The Delegation from Hanoi University of Science, led by Prof. Dr. Tran Nghi, Dean of Geology Faculty, visited AIT to discuss the cooperation between AIT and HUS in conducting a project, 'Integrated assessment of resources, natural, econo-social environmental conditions toward a solution for a sustainable development of the Vietnam-Laos western borders highlands from Thanhhoa to Komtum provinces'.

Through HUS's Geology Faculty, the project is financially supported by the Ministry of Sciences, Technology and Environment of Vietnam. It aims to propose an optimal solution for sustainable development of the Vietnam-Laos frontier villages and districts along the 8 provinces, based on the integrated assessments of all kinds of data on natural resources, environment, ecological and social conditions of the specific region.

It was agreed in principle that AIT, represented by the School of Advanced Technologies and the School of Environment, Resources and Development, will cooperate with HUS in this project, with AIT students from Laos or Vietnam to work in the initial stage of the collaboration.
