1. Environmental Indicators and Integrated Environmental Analysis (7-11 October 2002)

This course is offered as ED04.98W as a 1-credit course from 7-11 October 2002, by Dr. Trine Jensen of the Danish Environmental Research Institute. The course covers introduction of the concept of using indicators as a tool for environmental assessment. This includes presentation of different indicator concepts, methodologies for the construction of indicators and discussions on possibilities and limitations of using indicators. Different aggregation methods and development of indices will be introduced. The concept of integrated environmental analysis within the DPSIR (Driving force- Pressure - State - Impact - Response) framework will be presented and the methodology will be applied using environmental themes as illustrative examples. The organization and systematization of data as background information for the development of indicators will be included and illustrated by examples.

2. Mangrove Ecosystem and Management (25 October to 1 November 2002)

This course is offered as ED04.98X as a 2-credit course from 25 October to 1 November 2002, by Prof. Donald Macintosh and Dr. Elizabeth Ashton of the Centre for Tropical Ecosystems Research, Aarhus University, Denmark. This course covers mangrove ecology, including the ecological impacts of human activities in the tropical coastal zone, and the main issues affecting management of mangrove resources today. The course consists of introductory lectures supported by a reading list (25 October at 9-11 am and 1-3 pm), followed by a field trip to Ranong to study past and present forms of mangrove utilisation and how mangrove resources are currently managed. This field visit will form the basis for a student report and assessment. This report will be presented and reviewed on the last day of the course.

3. Fisheries Management (18-22 November 2002)

This course is offered as ED04.35 for 3 credits, for the whole term for regular AIT students under Dr. Somsak Boromthanarat. The modular part to be conducted by Dr. Douglas Wilson, from the Integrated Fisheries Management for Community Development, Denmark is scheduled on 18-22 November 2002, from 9-11 am and 1-3 pm. This part of the course covers the fisheries sociology/biology and management section. It will give a broad introduction to the sociological background of fisheries management. This is done on the basis that fisheries management is not only about understanding the biology but also about understanding the fishers and society surrounding a specific fishery. This section of the course includes lectures and activities such as simulations of the management process.
