International Public Symposium on 'Challenges to Human Security in a Borderless World'

On December 11, 2002, at 9:20 a.m., H.R.H Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will preside over the opening ceremony of the International Public Symposium on 'Challenges to Human Security in a Borderless World' at Chulalongkorn University.

The Symposium is organized by the Commission on Human Security, Center for Social Development Studies (CSDS), and Chulalongkorn University with the support of the Health Systems Research Fund, the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), and Friedrich Nauman Stiftung.

Mr. Anand Panyarachun, AIT Board Chairman and former Prime Minister of Thailand will deliver a keynote speech on that day and also, Mr. Jaturon Chaiseang, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, will give a farewell address. More than 1,000 participants across the region are expected to attend this symposium.

The conference will be divided into two sessions — the morning session entitled 'Freedom from fear' and the afternoon session entitled 'Freedom from want'. Speakers are two members of the Commission on Human Rights and two academics from Thailand and other regional countries.

The Commission on Human Security was established in June 2001, comprising of 12 members from around the world. It is chaired by Sadako Ogata, former UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate and Master of Trinity College, Cambridge University. The Commission is supported by the United Nations Secretary General.
