Welcome to SERD faculty

The School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) welcomes Dr. Michael Albert Zoebisch and Prof. Dr. Shinichi Okamoto who joined the SERD faculty on 1 September 2000.


Dr. Zoebisch, who is seconded by Danida, joined the Agricultural and Aquatic Systems and Engineering (AASE) Program as an Associate Professor in the Agricultural Systems field of study. He will concentrate his activities in the Integrated Watershed Development and Management (IWDM) field.

Dr. Zoebisch obtained his M.Sc. from Cranfield Institute of Technology, Silsoe College in Bedford, England in 1977 and Doctorate in Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from the University of Kassel, Germany in 1986. A specialist in soil and water engineering, soil and water conservation and land management, he has worked in Thailand, Kenya, Syria, Ghana, Togo and other developing countries.

Prior to joining AIT, he was principal scientist for land management and soil conservation at the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Syria. His specific research interests include land degradation and integrated land management.

Prof. Dr. Okamoto joined SERD from the Tokyo University Information Sciences, where he is a professor in the Dept. of Business and Management Information, Faculty of Business Administration and Information Services. His secondment as a Visiting Professor in the Urban Environmental Engineering and Management Program, to undertake the Akira Harada Memorial Lecture on subjects relating to environmental studies, was made possible through the generous support of Mr. Akira Harada.

Prof. Okamoto completed his M.S. and D.Eng. degrees in production planning and environmental engineering in 1973 and 1977 from Waseda University, Japan. His research interests include sampling design of toxicology studies, statistical models and applications, including quality assurance. Prof. Okamoto has received international recognition in the field of statistical design, including sampling techniques in air pollution and quality assurance.
