Nobel Laureate Amartya Kumar Sen lectures on 'Empowerment and Poverty'
The Asian Institute of Technology on December 11, hosted a reception for a distinguisted guest, Professor Amartya Kumar Sen, Nobel Laureate in Economics. After the reception, Professor Sen gave a special lecture titled 'Empowerment and Poverty' to more than 600 participants who were interested in his work.
Professor Sen, the Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics in recognition of his work on welfare economics. He has carried out research in a number of fields in economics and philosophy, including welfare economics, social choice theory, decision theory, etc. In 1990, he received the Giovanni Agnelli International Prize for his research on ethics of modern society and the Alan Shawn Feinstein World Hunger Award for his work on understanding and preventing world hunger.
Professor Sen was educated in Calcutta, India, and Cambridge University, England. He has served as President of many professional associations including the American Economic Association, the International Economic Association, the Indian Economic Association, the Econometric Society, and the Development Studies Association.
