According to AARM faculty member Dr. Krishna Salin,
who is the main organizer, the training program is intended for
practicing shrimp farmers, farm technicians, progressive entrepreneurs,
researchers in R&D institutions, officers of the departments of
fisheries from regional governments, and enterprising aquaculture
students from all over the world.
The primary facilitator is Dr. Nyan Taw, who is the
Senior Technical Advisor and General Manager of Blue Archipelago Bhd,
an integrated shrimp company in Malaysia. Dr. Nyan provided an overview
summary of Bifloc principles and practices on the opening day, saying
the technology was “not a miracle bullet” but rather a technology to
support sustainable production which, if applied correctly, can make
operations sustainable, cheaper and profitable.
The trainees will also conduct field visits to a
Bioflac shrimp farm in Chanthaburi province, apart from in-class
sessions. They will join a technical session on Thailand’s farming
systems delivered by Kasetsart University’s Dr. Krengkrai, and learn
from Mr. Veerasun Prayotamornkul of Thai Organic Shrimp Farming Group,
who has succeeded in producing disease-free shrimp through innovative
farming practices using Fermented Rice Bran.
Topics covered during the workshop include: Biofloc
technology in shrimp farming – Principles and practices, Biofloc shrimp
farm design and construction, Good management practices in shrimp
farming – Complete and semi-biofloc systems, Health management in
shrimp farming, Biofloc as Biosecurity in shrimp farms, Biofloc system
management scenarios, Economics of Biofloc Technology, Innovative
Biofloc Technology using Fermented Rice Bran Milk, Field visits to
shrimp farms in Thailand, and hands-on experience in farm
operations.
