A pair of past and present AIT professors recently combined to co-author a chapter in a major new book on Asia Pacific business management issues to be unveiled this week in Japan. The monograph collection of essays, titled Services Management in Asia Pacific: Issues and Challenges, is published by the Universiti Utara Malaysia Press.

Former AIT professor, Dr. Shinya Hanaoka, of Transportation Engineering (TRE), School of Engineering and Technology (SET), and current professor Dr. Singha Chiamsiri, of the School of Management (SOM), co-wrote a chapter titled “Strategic Entry of Low-cost Carriers in South East Asia.” The book is divided into four parts and also includes a foreword by AIT President, professor Said Irandoust.

The book is slated for official launch at a conference called “Creativity and Innovation: Imperatives for Global Business and Development," from 8-11 August 2007, hosted by Kyoto’s Ryukoku University.

Part one of Services Management in Asia Pacific: Issues and Challenges provides a conceptual understanding of services management. The second part then examines service industries in China, Malaysia, India and Japan. Part three, includes industry case studies that focus on low-cost aviation carriers in South-East Asia, branding and tourism in Thailand, and the financial derivatives market in China. The final part four highlights the trends in technology cooperation between private and public entities, retail services in South-East Asia, and risk management systems for aircraft maintenance services. A concluding chapter provides overview of the trends and transition in services management in South-East Asia.

Services Management in Asia Pacific: Issues and Challenges is an outcome of the first research workshop organized by the Society for Global Business and Economic Development (SGBED), at the Asian Institute of Technology, in January 2006. Dr. Singha served as the host organizer of the research workshop at AIT and is also one of the co-editors of the book.

The Society for Global Business and Economic Development comprises the consortium of international universities that has successfully developed a strong network of global scholars through the planning and staging of nine major global conferences. A group of committed academic leaders contributed to the early development of this consortium over the past decade, through successful conferences organized in China, India, Thailand, Slovakia, Mexico and Korea, under the a broad theme of “Global Business and Economic Development”. The Society secretariat is housed at the Center of International Business, School of Business, at Montclair State University in the United States.
