AIT-UNEP Carbon Neutral Meeting

AIT-UNEP Carbon Neutral Meeting

On 31 August 2007, AIT President Said Irandout along with Professor S. Kumar, Dean, School of Environment Resources and Development, Dr. H.L. Tien, Head, Infrastructure, met with Mr. Surendra Shrestha, UNEP Regional Resource Center for Asia-Pacific (RRC.AP) Director, and Ms. May Bernardo from United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to discuss the progress on the Carbon Neutral initiative planned for the Outreach Building.

At the Carbon Neutrality meeting, officials discussed further the proposal of UNEP to achieve carbon neutrality in its operations. In this context, the proposal was to initiate measures to reduce the energy consumption through a number of options including efficient lighting, space arrangements, reducing cooling load, and improved insulation. To carry out this task, AIT will be invited to provide input. Lessons learned from the experiences could then be used and replicated at AIT, and also adapted for curriculum development, and research and training on climate change activities. UNEP has offered to put up the capital costs necessary for renovation and change in equipment.
